In the late 11th century, the Chola military left Kadaram (now Kedah), the 9th Hindu rajah, Dubar Raja II, renounced Hinduism and converted to Islam. The curse is believed to have been the cause of the island’s lack of development which lasted until the birth of a child, a direct descendant of Mahsuri after seven generations.

After breakfast, proceed for Mangrove tour from the dock of Tanjung Rhu includes activities - Boat ride, birdwatching, wildlife observation, cave exploration and mangrove ecology. A short drive to the jetty where we get on board a boat and explore the mangrove forests and the ancient limestone outcrops of the north east.
Mangrove forests play an essential part in maintaining the ecological balance of the world, influencing the climate, provide shelter and act as major nurseries for fish and shrimps. Explore the exotic plants and animal species; many of them surviving by ingenious methods in a dynamic environment of constant change dictated by the rise and fall on the tides. You may have opportunities to observe the bizarre land walking fishes, kingfishers, eagles, kites and if you are very lucky you may see dolphins and otters too.
Another common stop on the tour are the bats found in their own cave and also include a special eagle feedings which is quite spectacular and definitely worth verifying. The tour concludes with a trip across the open ocean back to the Tanjung Rhu cove. Along the way are more spectacular rock outcrops and local fishermen.
The Black Sand Beach, is not a case of volcanic eruption. The real reason is given on the information boards at the beach itself.
It is one of Langkawi’s oldest fishing villages that offer a sense of calm and serenity. There is a jetty which serves as a nice spot for fishing and also doubles as a picturesque spot for photography. There are some stalls around the area that sells refreshments and also a few souvenir shops.
There exists huge amount of minerals called Tourmaline and Ilmenite in the granites of Gunung Raya (i.e. Mount Raya). These minerals are run down by the spring water from the mountain and cause the color of sand to turn black.
It is also considered that the black sand beach is the result of burnt soil from the rice fields which were burnt during the Siamese War. The burnt soil, probably, flow to the sea and got washed up to the shore. The sand is not exactly pitch black, it appears like some black dust mixed with the normal sand. Earlier years, the sand looked more blackish than what it is today. The Beach is not suitable for swimming but is ideal for meditation or reading.
There are many stories that explain why the sand is black here. However, the exact reason behind the black soil has not been discovered yet. Actually, scientists are still unable to figure out the truth behind the existence of the black sand.
The Eagle Square an icon of Langkawi Island, standing at 52 feet/12 meters tall eagle carving, perched majestically on an open and breezy square with its front facing the sea. It can be clearly seen from the air or from the sea standing in a flight mode warmly greets the tourists approaching through ferry.
